US religion panel puts India on Watch List, cites slow justice

The US government panel that monitors global religious freedom has once again listed India among countries that require close monitoring due to religious freedom violation.In its annual report, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) placed India on a 'Watch List' for 2012, citing concerns that justice for past communal violence continues to be "slow and ineffective".  read more »

Pope calls for full religious freedom

Pope Benedict XVI has issued a robust call for full religious freedom for the Catholic Church in Indonesia, including the right to proclaim publicly the Good News to all, while urging local Catholics not to take “for granted” their “freedom to live and preach the Gospel.”

The pope met publicly on Friday with a delegation of Indonesian bishops at the end of their ad limina visit to Rome. During the visit, the bishops each met privately with the pontiff as well as other Vatican officials.  read more »

"Un declared ban" on new church buildings in Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh government has imposed “an undeclared ban” on new church buildings, although the Indian Constitution allows freedom of religion.
The government “allows only religious community halls. The administration refuses to allow churches to be built due to pressure from certain pro-Hindu organizations.The new place of worship has SHOULD neither have a cross on top nor a bell.

Despite the government's efforts to foster communal harmony, "low police to population ratio, corruption, and an overburdened and antiquated court system", violations of religious freedom exist in India, a U.S. report has said.
While legal protections against violations of religious freedom exist in India, corruption and a lack of sufficient trained police led to the law not always being enforced rigorously, according to a recently released report by the State Department of the United States.The International Religious Freedom Report 2010, the State Department said that despite government efforts to foster communal harmony, extremist groups continued to view “ineffective investigation and prosecution of attacks on religious Christian minorities” as a signal that they could commit such violence with impunity.  read more »
