The Supreme Court Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of the right to education (RTE) act that mandates unaided private schools to keep 25 percent seats for students from economically and socially weaker sections of society. Government objects in court to RSS chief's irresponsible Malegaon remarks

New Delhi: The government Wednesday objected in the Supreme Court to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief's remarks on the Malegaon blasts when the court was hearing a plea by the case's key accused against the Bombay High Court order that allowed their custodial interrogation.

Additional Solicitor General Harin Rawal drew the attention of the apex court bench of Justice H.L.Dattu and Justice Anil R. Dave to the news item that had appeared in a national daily.'Today I find some article in a national daily which causes concern to me,' Rawal told the court.  read more »

Supreme Court of India stays trial of Kandhamal nun rape case

New Delhi: The trial of a case involving rape of a Christian nun allegedly by religious fanatics during the 2008 Kandhamal riots in Orissa was stayed on Monday by the Supreme Court on a plea by the victim challenging the prosecution's failure to cross-examine a sub-divisional magistrate.

A bench of Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice S S Nijjar stayed the trial while asking the Orissa government and others to respond to the nun's plea and posted the matter for further hearing on March 22.  read more »

Child born of an inter-caste marriage can't be denied quota benefits: Supreme Court of India

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said that a child born of an inter-caste marriage cannot be denied the right to reservations just on the basis of one of the parents being upper caste.The apex court said the child's upbringing is key to making that decision.The court said, "While determining the caste of a child born to a forward caste man and a tribal woman, the child will not necessarily take the caste of his father."  read more »

On 10 aug 11, at about 6 hrs in the morning, at village Banjamaha (about 7 kilometres afrom Raikia), being season of cultivation most people of the village were away in fields.
Mr Abedana Pradhan S/o Dussasana Pradhan, armed with a khanta (sword) came to the house of Mithu Digal. He shouted at Rebika digal, W/o Mithu digal "Where is your husband? I will cut (kill) him." Rebika got frightened and kept quiet. Abedan, left the place after looking around fiercely and finding that Mithu was not around. After about an hour, Abedana came back to the house of Mithu in rage holding the sword again shouting that he would kill Mithu and break down the house of Mithu. He tresspassed into house of Mithu and ransacked and broke down all articles in the house. After this he went away.  read more »
