NHRC concerned over incentive-based population policy

New Delhi, May 1 : Deeply concerned over incentive- based population policies framed by some state governments, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is mulling to frame guidelines and has sought details from states.

On 9th January at early morning at 4 AM, Mr.Sitakanta Gantayat, the Police IIC, Daringibadi Police Station accompanied with 30 OSAP (Orissa State Armed Police) force gheraoed his House at Linepara village 2-3 kilometers from Daringibadi block head-quarter and told that the District Magistrate called for him for a discussion. When Junesh replied that he would go to the DM’s place with his own vehicle, then the IIC forcefully dragged him into the Police Van to an unknown place. When he asked for the warrant order, his plea was completely ignored by the Police. On 10th from newspapers sources it was known to us that he had been taken to the Baliguda jail in a very humiliated condition with hand-cuffs and face covered with black cloths. On 9th whole-day, Mr.J.N. Pankaj, the Superintendent of Police, Kandhamal repeatedly announced through different TV channels and newspapers that Mr.Junesh has links with Maoists and the Police have strong proof and tried to create a hate against the human rights defender. National Human Rights commission seeks Kandhamal report on the basis of complaints from GCIC

Bhubaneswar, Jan 19 - National Human RightsCommission today directed the Orissa government to submit a detailed report on the steps taken in the aftermath of the2008 Kandhamal communal riots.

"The Commission has directed the state government tosubmit a report and a contingency plan to deal with suchsituation," NHRC Chairperson Justice K G Balakrishnan told reporters .  read more »
