Kashmir’s main political parties must act to prevent zealotry in the Valley
While media attention is riveted on the Salman Rushdie row, another controversy provoked by religious zealots in the Kashmir valley hasn't received its due share of critical scrutiny. For the past few weeks, a Christian priest and foreign NGOs have been targeted for seeking to persuade Muslim youth to give up their faith in return for liquor, women and money. One priest, Pastor Chander Mani Khanna, had to appear before a sharia court to defend himself against charges of proselytisation. Srinagar (J & K.): 01-12-2011 - Rev.C.M.Khanna arrested and imprisoned on false charges of forced conversion in the Kashmir Valley on the 28th of October was granted bail by the Srinagar court and was released from jail on 30th November, 2011. He reached his house in Jammu at 3 in the morning on December 1st. He was accompanied by Mr. S.M. Gill, a former MLC, Mr. Nicodemus, a prominent businessman and President of J & K United Christian Forum, and Mr. Fiesta Sodra, Vice Chairman of J & K. United Christian Forum. Earlier in the day Dr. H.T. Sangliana, Ex. M.P. and Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities in India, officially visiting the Kashmir Valley and who had called on Rev. Khanna in the prison, we understand, was quite apprehensive about the possibility of a bail, taking into consideration the situation prevailing in the beleaguered Muslim majority State of J & K. read more »
