6th Murder in 14 months in Kandhamal-Orissa

Suryakant Nayak S/o Late Chitrasen Nayak of village Bakingia, Raikia, Kandhamal was murdered on night of 2.3.12.
Suryakant was a christian belonging to C N I (Baptist). He was a daily wage earner. He along with his mother and three daughters was living in his house beside the road to Raikia, near Mondakia Chhak.On 2/3/12, He went to the Utkal Gramya Bank at Raikia, along with his mother and all three daughters, withdrew Rs.1500/-. After purchasing some things with the cash that was with his mother, they returned towads home. About a kilometere before his home, (there is a place where country liquor is made and sold), he stayed back, while his mother and children went home. Villagers had seen him (being drunk) lying on the road. He did not return home till morning. So his mother and children became panic and called other villagers and began serching for him. When he was not found till 4th morning, villagers went to police station at Raikia and filed complaint regarding missing him.  read more »

Supreme Court of India stays trial of Kandhamal nun rape case

New Delhi: The trial of a case involving rape of a Christian nun allegedly by religious fanatics during the 2008 Kandhamal riots in Orissa was stayed on Monday by the Supreme Court on a plea by the victim challenging the prosecution's failure to cross-examine a sub-divisional magistrate.

A bench of Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice S S Nijjar stayed the trial while asking the Orissa government and others to respond to the nun's plea and posted the matter for further hearing on March 22.  read more »

Kandhmal youth meet to promote peace and harmony

A youth meet was organised by "Yuva Shakti - Kandhamal", on 4--5 Feb 2012, at Divyajyoti Pastoral Centre at konjamendi. It was attended by more than 200 christian youth belonging to all denominations.The youth prayed, played, danced, sang songs, discussed.Global Council of Indian Christians(GCIC) actively engaged in bringing back normalcy in Kandhamal and involved in this peace movement also.  read more »

Kandhamal Pastor's house attacked in broad day light

House of Pastor Pabita Mohan Kota (Village: Adigar, G P Minia, P S Sadar Phulbani) was attacked by throwing bricks, by Mr Jaleshwar Pradhan of same village, today 25 Jan, at about 3.45 p m.. According to wife of the pastor, the attacker appeared to have consumed plenty of liquor and came shouting towards her house, he pushed her daughters, shouted "You Christians must not live here, it is not your patta land, last time only your houses were broken, this time all of you will be buried here." He began to throw brick pieces and bricks at the house. There is plenty of pieces of bricks of old house and new new bricks too have been brought to rebuild house. Children and wife of the pastor ran away to a distance. Pieces of bricks could be seen all over and asbestos of house too have been damaged.  read more »

House burnt down in Kandhamal

Br. Deelip Mallik s/o Lange mallick is from a village known as Madinata near Baliguda in kandhamal district had gone with his family for Christmas day worship on 24th December.When he returned he found that his house was burnt down along with his cows and other domestic animal he reared in a shed attached to his house. He has lodged an FIR in the Baliguda police station.GCIC has pursued the matter with district authorities

I have been touring interior areas during past few days. I just reached Phulbani. I am to leave for Pobingia after sending you this mail. The Parish Priest at Pobungia (Phiringia block) is among the most frightened people in Kandhamal.
A good number of families of Phiringia, Chakapad, Tikabali, K Nuagam blocks have left the distict as they were in fear of being attacked. Many people told me that they would not go to chruch for night services. Many places, village chapels have not been decorated too. At many villages, though they have not fled the places, people are in fear.  read more »
