Police constable Sanjit Kumar Naik admits to lying

The Catholic nun, who was raped in Orissa's Kandhamal district after a mob attacked the church at Baliguda following the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati on August 23 ,
Constable Sanjit Naik told the Cuttack court that he had lied before the Kandhamal court and claimed that he was present when the nun and the priest came to file complaints.
Naik while deposing before the Kandhamal court on July 20, 2009 had said he was not a witness when the nun accompanied by a priest had arrived to file their complaint at the K Nuagaon police station on August 25th 2008
Naik, however, told the Cuttack court that he had lied before the Kandhamal court and claimed that he was present when the nun and the priest came to file complaints.
He also maintained that he had signed the seizure list prepared by one of the officers of the police station on August 25, 2008.
Another witness also gave a different version of events in the rape of Catholic nun in as the second phase of the deposition in Cuttack Court.
Witness Debadutta Naik, a local farmer, who had earlier been examined by a court in Kandhamal said he was present when a mob had attacked the Baliguda Catholic Church on the day.
In his deposition, Naik said a mob of about 50 to 60 youths had attacked the church while shouting pro-Hindu slogans and manhandled the priest and a nun.
Naik said that he saw after some time the priest and the nun being paraded on the road with their hands folded and a mob shouting slogans.
The nun had injury marks on her face, while her body was covered with a cloth, Naik said.
