AMRITSAR: Hundreds of Indian Christians assembled at Indo-Pak international border at Attari on Saturday to demonstrate against the death sentence awarded to Aasia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian, for committing blasphemy.

The activists of Christian Front Punjab (CFP) from various parts of Punjab asked the Pakistani government to revoke its orders of capital punishment awarded to Aasia Bibi. They also urged the international community to press upon the Pakistan government to scrap its blasphemy law. The protesters said that the blasphemy law in Pakistan was misused to settle personal scores.

Aasia Bibi, a mother of five children, was accused of uttering blasphemous words against Prophet Mohammad and was booked under the blasphemy law in 2009 by a court in Nankana Sahib district and was sentenced to death in November 2010.

The CFP president Lawarance Chaudhary handed over a memorandum to the local authorities who are to forward it to the Pakistan High Commission. The memorandum urges Pakistan president and Chief Justice of Pakistan to reconsider the report of Pakistan's National Commission on Status of Women. The report has concluded that the case against Aasia was filed under pressure from the influential locals to settle personal scores with her. Meanwhile, Bishop of Amritsar PK Samantaroy said that his church had already taken up the issue with various Christian bodies across the world to campaign for Aasia and build pressure on Pakistan government for scrapping of the blasphemy law. "It is unfortunate that Christians or other minority communities in Pakistan are targeted under the blasphemy law," said Samantaroy.
