Sub: GCIC Condemns the Distorted Report by Justice Somashekhar on Church Attacks in Karnataka
And demands the State Government to reject it forthwith
Dear Sir,
The Global Council of Indian Christians condemns Justice B.K.Somashekhar’s Final Report on Church Attacks in Karnataka, in unequivocal terms, and demands that the state government reject the Report, as it is a bundle of lies intended mainly to mislead and confuse the people Karnataka, more so the secular-minded people in the state with its distorted facts and figures, which are far from truth. The saddest part of the whole thing is the “clean chit” given by the commission to the police, the leaders of BJP and other Sangh Parivar outfits in the respective districts, and the BJP Government in the state.
Anybody can see the game plan of the people concerned, as the final report submitted to the Chief Minister of Karnataka on28-01-2011, is completely contrary to the very commission’s interim report submitted on the 1st Feb. 2010, in which the police officials in the districts, the BJP leaders of Zilla Panchayats, Taluk Pancvhayats and the Srirama Sene and Bajrang Dal activists were implicated. In the interim report, Justice Somashekhar had also clearly mentioned that the police had lathi-charged innocent women and children. But in this report, the very same Justice Somashekhar, without naming any individual or organization, has very cunningly stated that they were mounted by anti-Christian fundamentalists. Right-thinking people throughout the length and breadth of the state are bewildered, and are openly stating that there is an ocean of difference between this final report and the interim report released in February 2010. This is certainly a travesty of justice, an attempt to hoodwink the people of Karnataka, indeed a diabolic act to twist the facts to suit their diabolic deeds, unbecoming of any member of a civilized society in a democratic country like India.
In the entire report the only truth which Justice Somashekhar could not help expressing is that the attacks have taken place. And then the entire gimmick of travelling to different districts, recording the statements of nearly 1500 petitioners was only a pretense of doing his commission work. He says that the attackers are anti-Christian fundamentalists and that they resorted to those attacks hoping that they would get the government support for them and that there were no specific motives for those attacks and that no Sangh Parivar outfits were involved in the attacks either directly or indirectly. No attacks, he says, were pre-planned and that they were spontaneous actions. He also says that no real Hindus ever participated in those attacks against the Christians or their places of worship. But no names of any organizations or individuals are mentioned. Further he says, that conversions are going on throughout the state due to undue influence and inducements, and that anti-conversion law must be implemented in the state to stop such conversions.
Every attempt seems to have been made by Justice Somashekhar to rewrite the whole story as, perhaps, dictated by his mentors at the Vidhana Soudha as per their requirements and convenience to throw dust into the eyes of the people at large and carry on with their hidden agenda of the Hindutva Ideology. what he had included in his interim report looks like a case of an attempt to hood-wink the agitated people in the state, apparently by offering them a temporary “carrot” to pacify them, while at the same time enhancing his bargaining power with the State Government in particular and the Sangh Parivar outfits in the country in general, in order to ensure something substantial for himself in the evening of his life.
It is indeed a great fraud perpetrated upon the Christian community by the BJP Government in Karnataka y appointing a one-man commission presided over by a “yes” man, which was very strongly opposed at the very outset by various Christian Organizations in the State fearing that the report in the end would a tailor-made one. What has happened now is, exactly what was foreseen even by a man of average intelligence in the state when this one-man commission was appointed. This was also a colossal waste of time, energy, money and man-power on the part of the government and the members of various institutions, organizations as well as individuals, during the last two years. It is indeed a great fraud systematically played on the innocent and peace-loving Christians in the state in particular, and those of the whole of India in general. The National Human Rights Commission, the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission and many other human rights organizations cutting across religious and party lines in the state have indicted the state government and the Sangh Parivar outfits with facts and figures in a very clear terms and demanded the government to give all protection to the Christians and their institutions and places of worship.
Also, ever since the September attacks, there have been nearly 150 attacks in the state on Christians and their places of worship, some of them quite lethal, as on date. Even as this report is out, emboldened by its contents learnt through the various TV channels in the state, we understand that the attacks on Christians have already started in the state. At 11.30 in the morning today, we understand that a large group of RSS and Bajrang Dal activists at Kanakagiri, near Gangavati in Koppal district simply locked up five Christians – J. Ravi, Lawrence, Williams,Manjula and James without any rhyme or reason, and mercilessly beat them up black and blue, and the police are giving them the necessary protection, after detaining them in the police station. The contention of the Hindu fundamentalists, as we have learnt, is that they have to either revert to Hinduism or migrate to some other place. It is also learnt that they are targeting all the Christians in the place.
Under these circumstances, we demand the state government of Karnataka, 1) to reject Justice Somashekar Report forthwith, 2) to give immediate protection to the Christian community and their places of worship and their institutions in the state, 3) to give relief to those individuals and Christian institutions affected by the attacks in September 2008, and then during the last two and odd years in the state, 4) to take legal measures against all those police officials and other perpetrators of the crimes in September 2008 and during the last two and odd years, 5) to uphold the fundamental rights and the constitutional guarantees as enshrined in the Constitution of India, regardless of caste, creed, religion or region of the citizens resident in the state of Karnataka.
I would be thankful and much obliged if you could kindly give the necessary publicity to this Press Release.
Thanking you,
For Global Council of Indian Christians,
( Sajan K. George)
National President
