2 Arrested in Mangalore Infant Jesus Church Bash-up

Police have arrested two people for dashing their motorbike into the main door of a church in Bikarnakatte, Mangalore, and breaking it. The security guard of Infant Jesus Church informed the police about the July 9 incident. Police have arrested two persons and later released them. The two men, reportedly working as driver and conductor of a city bus in Mangalore, were not under the influence of alcohol when the incident happened. Infant Jesus Church, considered a local pilgrim Church, attracts large number of people from different religions. The Churches in Karnataka have faced increased attacks from Hindu groups since 2008 when pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in the state. Hindu fanatics allege Christians of engaging in forced conversions of Hindus. On September 14, 2008, about 20 churches were vandalized in Mangalore, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, and in other districts of the state.
