Kerala Headscarf case: Court issues summons to principal

Alappuzha (Ker), Jun 5 -A local court today issued summons to suspended principal of a church-run school in a case relating to issuance of Transfer Certificate (TC) to a Muslim girl for wearing headscarf while attending classes.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Wasin issued summons to Mary Jacinta to appear before the court on July 31.

Jacinta was suspended in the wake of the controversy at the English medium school run by Kerala-based Believers Church.

The court took prima facie cognisance of the case under IPC 504--(insult intended to provoke breach of peace) after examining witnesses and documents submitted by the girl's father Nazir Musliar as complainant despite compromise reached at the instance of district authorities.

The case pertained to issuance of TC to X standard student, Nabala, about two months ago allegedly on the ground that she did not adhere to the school's dress code which disallowed students from wearing headscarf (mafta).
