The incident was triggered after Mr. Singh allegedly slapped Bajrang Dal leader Govind Prabhu. According to Mr. Singh, the activists had been charged with sexually abusing a Christian woman and attacking a mosque during the January 22 bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The incident occurred between 10.30 p.m. and 1 a.m. when Mr. Singh, a 2007 batch IPS officer, was away on duty.According to Mr. Singh, around 400 persons from the BJP and Bajrang Dal flung bottles at the house and raised abusive slogans against not only him but also his wife.
Mr. Singh said Mr. Prabhu had to be physically thrown out of the police station after he started abusing officers there.
Speaking to The Hindu on Thursday, Mr. Singh said he has not yet booked a case against Mr. Prabhu or the other offenders.
Condemned
Condemning the incident, the Superintendent of Police (Dakshina Kannada) A.S. Rao said: “Such criminal intimidation of an IPS officer's family is unprecedented in the State. We are planning to take stern action.”
Confirming that he was told of some disturbance and protests in the area, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) A.R. Infant said: “I was not aware that his [Mr. Singh's] house too had been targeted.”
Mr. Singh's IPS batch mate and ASP of Bidar Y.S. Ravi Kumar said, “If they (the agitators) wanted, they could have picketed his office or petitioned his senior officer. What they did was illegal and unwarranted.”
Another batch mate, who preferred anonymity, said: “I have no fear for my own safety. But if my official actions start having repercussions on the safety of my family, I will not be able to discharge my duty freely.”
Kateel's response
Asked for his response, Mr. Kateel said, “I was on my way [elsewhere]. Many of our workers were gathered there [outside Amit Singh's house]. I pacified them and went away.”
He said he was at the spot around 11.30 p.m. for a few minutes.
Ms. Mallika Prasad said, “I joined the protesters. It was quite peaceful. There was only slogan shouting, but no stone-pelting or bottle throwing.”
